Job description:
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 21 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.

Within the Experiments Division, the Structure of Soft Matter group is now seeking to recruit a:

PhD Thesis Student (m/f)
Subject: Deformable colloids under electric field

GENERAL FRAMEWORK

The manipulation of colloids under an electric field is used in electronic displays such as eBook-readers. The process also occurs naturally in biology near charged membranes. Deformable colloids, which are built-up from hard nanoparticles and soft polymers, can be aligned, stretched and their architecture might be modified when subjected to an electric field. By switching on and off the field, the characteristic time taken by the system to respond to this stimulus can be experimentally determined. Understanding how the microstructure of the deformable colloids influences this characteristic time provides the ability to tune the response of field-sensitive systems. This can be best achieved by means of high resolution Small Angle X-rays Scattering that probes spatial domains from nm to µm down to ms time resolution.

DESCRIPTION OF THE THESIS WORK
The successful candidate will use time-resolved SAXS and Ultra-SAXS on the recently upgraded state-of-the-art instrument ID02 to determine the successive steps through which colloids align or relax under an applied field and correlate them with the time taken. These experiments will be complemented by electric birefringence measurements, using polarized light. After acquiring the necessary know-how on a simple system of nano-fibres, the student will study deformable "living" colloids forming necklaces resulting from mixing oppositely charged nanoparticles as hard beads and polymers as a soft network.
