Job description:

The Graduate School Symmetry Breaking in Fundamental Interactions at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany) invites suitable candidates to apply for Ph.D. fellowships in our International Ph.D. Program.

Applicants must hold an outstanding Master's of Science degree (or equivalent) in physics with specialization in one of the fields listed below. It is not necessary to hold the degree at the point of application. However, the transcripts must be presented to proof that all requirements for the degree have been completed and the degree must have been awarded prior to the admission to the fellowship.

Thesis projects are offered in the following research areas:

- Elementary Particle Physics (experiment and theory),
- Hadron and Nuclear Physics (experiment and theory),
- Atomic Physics and Physics with Ultra-Cold Neutrons,
- Nuclear Chemistry,
- Particle Astrophysics,
- Lattice Gauge Theory,
- Quantum Field Theory,
- String Theory.

Candidates who have studied at a university where neither English nor German have been the language of studies are recommended to proof their English or German abilities by standardized test result. The selection and admission criteria are based on the academic qualification, motivation and suitability to the program.

The successful applicants will be awarded two-year fellowships funded according to approx. two thirds of a regular postdoctoral appointment. Extensions are given by the individual work groups. Fellows are expected to participate in a support and qualification program including a graduate lecture program providing specialized training in the areas listed above. This is complemented by a weekly seminar series and annual topical workshops, summer schools, and retreats. Fellows also have access to travel and research funds and can be awarded research prizes based on their performance.

Applicants should visit our website to find detailed information about application requirements and more. Applicants should also arrange for two recommendation letters and referee forms by professional colleagues. The forms can be downloaded from our website.
